ARTS EDUCATION IS NOT "EXTRA"
ARTS EDUCATION IS EDUCATION!
Arts Education as Reparations
Students with consistent participation in the arts are 5 times more likely to graduate, 3.5 times more likely to earn a bachelor's degree, 1.5 times more likely to vote, and 1.1 times more likely to be lifelong readers.
Consistent participation in the arts has such a powerful impact on social, emotional, and intellectual development that it significantly narrows or eliminates the achievement gap.
Yet 80% of Oakland’s students—98% of whom are students of color—are denied the advantage of an arts education based on their access to generational wealth. That inequity is structural racism.
Access to arts education is a social justice issue, and Arts for Oakland Kids is an Arts Justice Fund.
AOK's Arts Justice Initiative is designed to address the systemic inequities in Oakland’s arts education offerings by providing every student in financially oppressed schools with consistent, weekly, trauma-informed arts education taught by top arts organizations from around the Bay.
With your help, Arts for Oakland Kids will fund $300,000 of arts education grants per school, plus coordination and professional evaluation. Grants will be paid to arts organizations—which also desperately need our support at this time—and they will provide the in-school classes in coordination with the school site.
Donations of any size are very much appreciated!
$5,000 will fund an entire grade level for a month of weekly, hands-on arts education.
$50,000 funds an entire grade level for a year!
